Sustainable batteries for a green future

Advanced lead batteries

Supporting a green future

Societies across the globe are transitioning to a more sustainable, green and environmentally-friendly future. Through clean mobility by increasing adoption of electric vehicles, to clean energy generation through renewables, to greater circular economy of products – these are all vital ways in which lead batteries are supporting a more sustainable world.

Closed-loop system

Gold standard for circular economy

The lead battery industry sets the standard for other industries to follow with regards to circular economy.

A long-established collection and recycling scheme means almost 100% of used lead batteries are collected at end-of-life for recycling. This far surpasses any other battery technology.

Sustainable eco-design

With sustainable eco-design, where over 90% of a lead battery’s material is recovered and re-used, the average lead battery comprises approximately 80% recycled material.

The lead in lead batteries can be infinitely recycled with no loss of performance or quality. The closed-loop economy of a lead battery means they continue to have economic value. This reduces waste, contributing to the protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources.

Sustainability facts

  • Almost 100% of lead batteries are collected and recycled at end-of-life in the US and Europe. A new lead battery is made up of approximately 80% recycled material
  • Lead from lead batteries can be infinitely recycled with no loss in performance, and all components of a lead battery can be recycled, including lead and plastic
  • Lead batteries support renewable energy storage projects across the globe
  • Virtually all electric vehicles contain a lead battery, and they support EV charging stations
  • For start-stop and micro-hybrids, fuel consumption savings of 5-10% are enabled by lead batteries
  • According to The Sustainability Consortium, lead batteries are one of the top 5 most sustainable consumer products

Manufacturing

Lowest footprint

Due to high standards of manufacturing, lead battery production is reported to have the lowest environmental footprint and lowest production energy and carbon emissions of all widely-used battery technology manufacturing.

The use of recovered lead to produce new batteries is less energy intensive than using primary lead, helping to conserve the finite natural resources needed to support a growing demand for advanced lead battery technology.
